This 118 page spiral journal features a cover adored with vintage dorid nudibranchs painted by the Japanese artist Kumataro Ito. He was the chief illustrator for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries survey of the aquatic resources of the Philippines islands (1907 – 1910).  Ito was aboard the expedition's vessel, USS Albatross to record the colors and patterns of live nudibranchs and fishes when freshly collected, as preserved specimens quickly lost their colors and color photography of the era was not practical for field work.  Overall, he visited the ship three times for a total of 16 months drawing and painting. Once the expedition ended, Ito would travel to Washington, D.C. and stay a year preparing the final illustrations.

Dorids are one of the major nudibranchs subgroups.  They are characterized by having an oblong body with the upper portion covered by the mantle and the lower portion consisting of a flattened, muscular foot.  The mantle may have bumps and tubercles that store defensive toxins. Also located on the dorsal surface are a circular arrangement of gills and a pair rhinophores located on the top of the head. Rhinophores contain chemosensory organs.
