
This ceramic ornament features a detailed antique illustration a Prickly Anglerfish (Himantolophus appelii) by a New Zealand ichthyologist and scientific illustrator, Frank Edward Clarke in various publications between 1873 and 1898. Clarke originally described the species for science in 1878 and named it Aegaeonichthys Appelii. The name honors a Mr. Appel, the man who brought Clarke the specimen.
