Rays are fish whose skeleton, like their close relatives the sharks, is made of cartilege and both belong to the subclass Elasmobranchii. Members of the order Batoidea, their flattened, disc-shaped bodies and wing-like pectoral fins allow them to "fly" gracefully through the ocean. There are over 600 species of rays, divided into several major groups, including stingrays, manta rays, eagle rays, and skates. Each group exhibits unique adaptations, but they all share a similar body plan that reflects their benthic (bottom-dwelling) or pelagic (open-water) lifestyles.

One of the most recognizable groups is the stingrays, named for the venomous spines on their tails, used primarily for defense. Manta rays and their smaller relatives, mobula rays, are filter feeders, gracefully soaring through the water as they scoop up plankton. Skates, on the other hand, are typically smaller and lack the stinging spines of their stingray cousins, relying on their camouflage and bottom-dwelling habits for protection. Rays are found in oceans worldwide, from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea, and some species, such as freshwater stingrays, even inhabit rivers and lakes. Known for their intelligence and social behaviors, rays are vital to marine ecosystems, playing roles as predators, prey, and ecosystem engineers.
