About the product

Exclusive Undersea Naturalist Design.

These cork-backed coasters are adored with a vintage Atlantic white-spotted octopus. The illustration was painted by Comingio Merculiano (1845- 1915), the in-house illustrator at Naples Zoological Station.  It was published in 1896 in a book on the systematics of Mediterrean cephalopods.  The author was Jatta, Giuseppe and the original title in Italian is  I Cefalopodi viventi nel Golfo di Napoli (sistematica) In Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres- Abschnitte, 23. Monographie.  The English translation is Cephalopods living in the Gulf of Naples (systematics) in Fauna and flora of the Gulf of Naples and the adjacent marine sections, Monograph 23.

The Atlantic white-spotted octopus (Callistoctopus macropus), also known as the  white-spotted octopus is an inhabitant of the subtropical and tropical waters of the Atlantic and associated seas. Members of the genus Callistoctopus are characterized by their slender arms and nocturnal habits. This octopus is easily recognized by its vivid red body covered with numerous white spots and its long, thin arms that can extend up to three times its body length. Its distinctive appearance makes it a favorite subject for underwater photographers and divers lucky enough to spot one in its natural habitat.

Callistoctopus macropus is primarily nocturnal, spending its days hidden in crevices or under rocks and emerging at night to hunt. It feeds on a diet of small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, using its remarkable intelligence and dexterity to outwit prey. This species is known for its ability to change color and texture for camouflage, an essential skill for evading predators. Unlike many other octopuses, the white-spotted octopus is relatively fast-moving and relies on both jet propulsion and its long arms to navigate its environment. Found in shallow coastal waters, often near coral reefs and seagrass beds, this octopus plays an important ecological role in controlling prey populations. While not considered endangered, habitat loss and climate change pose potential threats to its populations, highlighting the need for continued marine conservation efforts.
