Corkwood Coaster Set - Vintage Atlantic Longarm Octopus

These cork-backed coasters are adored with a vintage Atlantic longarm octopus (Macrotritopus defilippi) ). The illustration was painted by Comingio Merculiano (1845- 1915), the in-house illustrator at Naples Zoological Station.  It was published in 1896 in a book on the systematics of Mediterrean cephalopods.  The author was Jatta, Giuseppe and the original title in Italian is  I Cefalopodi viventi nel Golfo di Napoli (sistematica) In Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres- Abschnitte, 23. Monographie.  The English translation is Cephalopods living in the Gulf of Naples (systematics) in Fauna and flora of the Gulf of Naples and the adjacent marine sections, Monograph 23.

The Atlantic longarm octopus (Macrotritopus defilippi), also known as the Lilliput longarm octopus, inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian Oceans. These elusive creatures have a depth range 1-180 meters (≈ 4-600 feet), and frequently burying themselves beneath the sediment. Their elongated arms, up to seven times longer than their bodies, are their defining feature, allowing them to swiftly burrow to escape predatores and capture prey. They are opportunistic feeders, preying on a variety of small invertebrates like crustaceans and worms. While their primary defense is camouflage, some Caribbean individuals have been observed mimicking the appearance and movements of behavior of the plate fish (Bothus lunatus), a bottom-dwelling flounder that lives in the same habitat as the octopus. Reproduction involves a brief courtship, followed by the female laying a clutch of eggs in her den. Parental care is crucial, with the female diligently guarding her eggs until they hatch.
