Corkwood Coaster Set - Vintage Muusoctopus levis Octopus

These cork-backed coasters are adored with a vintage Muusoctopus levis. The illustration was painted by Ewald Heinrich Rübsaamen (1857-1919) and published in 1914 a scientific report from the 1898-1899 German Deep-Sea Expedition.

Muusoctopus levis has no common name, because it is no commonly encountered by humans and inhabits the remote, frigid waters of the Southern Ocean.  Found around Kerguelen and Heard Islands and near the Antarctic Peninsula, they have a depth range of 21 to 404 meters (≈ 69 to 1,325 feet).  M. levis appears to prefer feeding on brittlestars with 50 of 70 specimens having stomachs filled exclusively with this rather crunchy cuisine.

Rübsaamen's illustration is in the 18 volume of Dr. Carl Chun's report, Die Cephalopoden. (1910-1914) in Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Tiefsee-Expedition auf dem Dampfer "Valdivia" 1898-1899; Bd. 18: T.1 Atlas. The English title is The cephalopods.
