Corkwood Coaster Set - Vintage Veiled Octopus

These cork-backed coasters are adored with a vintage veiled octopus (Velodona togata). The illustration was painted by Ewald Heinrich Rübsaamen (1857-1919) and published in 1914 a scientific report from the 1898-1899 German Deep-Sea Expedition.

The veiled octopus (Velodona togata)is named for its "velo," or sail-like webbing that stretches between its arms.  The octopus use this webbing to envelop prey such as crustaceans.  Found in the Indian Ocean off the coast of central and southern Africa. This deep-sea cephalopod is a resident of the mesopelagic zone, hanging out at depths of 200 to 1,000 meters (≈ 656 to 3,280 feet). One study noted that they were most abundant between depths of 400 to 600 meters (≈ 1310 - 1980 ft) with males more common at the shallower part of this range while females preferred the greater depths.

Rübsaamen's illustration is in the 18 volume of Dr. Carl Chun's report, Die Cephalopoden.
