About the product

Exclusive Undersea Naturalist Design.

This tee features a detailed vintage illustrations of octopuses. The illustrations are from the reports of three late nineteenth century scientific publications. The species shown represent both shallow water and deep sea octopuses from the Mediterrean Sea, Atlantic, Antarctic, and Indian Oceans.

Two of these reports were from expeditions:

Joubin, Louis (1900) Fascicule XVII: Cephalopodes provenant des campagnes de la Princesse-Alice (1891-1897), in Resultats des Campagnes Scientifiques Accomplies sur Son Yacht par Albert Ier, Prince Souverain de Monaco. English: Paper XVII: Cephalopods from the campaigns of Princess Alice (1891-1897), in Results of the Scientific Campaigns Accomplished on His Yacht by Albert I, Sovereign Prince of Monaco.

Chun, Carl. Die Cephalopoden. (1910-1914) in Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Tiefsee-Expedition auf dem Dampfer "Valdivia" 1898-1899; Bd. 18: T.1 Atlas. English: The cephalopods. (1910-1914). in Scientific results of the German deep-sea expedition on the steamer "Valdivia" 1898-1899;  Vol 18 Part 1 Atlas.

The third source was essentially a book on the systematics of Mediterrean cephalopods. It was the 23rd monograph in the series Fauna and Flora of the Gulf of Naples, published by the Naples Zoological Station.

Jatta, Giuseppe. (1896)  I Cefalopodi viventi nel Golfo di Napoli (sistematica) In Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres- Abschnitte, 23. Monographie. English: Cephalopods living in the Gulf of Naples (systematics) in Fauna and flora of the Gulf of Naples and the adjacent marine sections, Monograph 23.

Octopuses are some of the most intelligent and adaptable creatures in the ocean, belonging to the class Cephalopoda and the order Octopoda. With around 300 known species, these soft-bodied mollusks are found in diverse habitats, from shallow tidal pools to the deep sea. Octopuses are renowned for their incredible problem-solving skills, keen eyesight, and ability to manipulate objects with their eight arms, which are lined with powerful suckers. They use their color-changing skin, controlled by specialized cells called chromatophores, to camouflage themselves or signal warnings. Some species can even mimic other marine animals to avoid predators. Known for their solitary and secretive nature, octopuses are carnivorous hunters, feeding on crabs, fish, and other small prey. Despite their short lifespans, often only a few years, they play a vital role in marine ecosystems as both predators and prey. These enigmatic creatures continue to inspire awe and curiosity in scientists and ocean enthusiasts alike.

Perfect for biology enthusiasts, octopus devotees, marine life lovers, scuba divers, and snorkelers. These v-necks are perfect for adding a splash of personality to every outfit. Made from 100% cotton, the classic midweight fabric serves as a printing canvas for these vintage illustrations.
