Corkwood Coaster Set - Vintage Four Horn Octopus

These cork-backed coasters are adored with a vintage four horn octopus (Pteroctopus tetracirrhus).  It was originally identified as Scaeurgus tetracirrhus in the illustration painted by Comingio Merculiano (1845- 1915), the in-house illustrator at Naples Zoological Station.  The illustration was published in an 1896 book on the systematics of Mediterrean cephalopods.  The author was Jatta, Giuseppe and the original title in Italian is  I Cefalopodi viventi nel Golfo di Napoli (sistematica) In Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres- Abschnitte, 23. Monographie.  The English translation is Cephalopods living in the Gulf of Naples (systematics) in Fauna and flora of the Gulf of Naples and the adjacent marine sections, Monograph 23.

The Four horn octopus (Pteroctopus tetracirrhus) is a deep-sea octopus and inhabits the twilight zone of the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean, typically between 200 and 500 meters deep (≈ 650 - 1650 ft). They have a gelatinous body and reduced ink sac, and are well adapted to the pressures and low light of the deep sea. Its diet primarily consists of crustaceans and small fish. With a lifespan of just one year, these octopuses exhibit rapid growth and mature early. Females reach sexual maturity at a larger size than males, showcasing a clear difference in reproductive strategies.
