Corkwood Coaster Set - Vintage Atlantic Wart Octopus

These cork-backed coasters are adored with a vintage Atlantic Warty Octopus. The illustration was painted by Comingio Merculiano (1845- 1915), the in-house illustrator at Naples Zoological Station.  It was published in 1896 in a book on the systematics of Mediterrean cephalopods.  The author was Jatta, Giuseppe and the original title in Italian is  I Cefalopodi viventi nel Golfo di Napoli (sistematica) In Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres- Abschnitte, 23. Monographie.  The English translation is Cephalopods living in the Gulf of Naples (systematics) in Fauna and flora of the Gulf of Naples and the adjacent marine sections, Monograph 23.

The Atlantic Warty Octopus, (Scaeurgus unicirrhus), also sometimes called the Unihorn Octopus, is a deep-sea octopus found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Dwelling at depths ranging from 150 to over 1,000 meters (≈ 340 - 3300), this elusive cephalopod prefers soft, muddy or sandy seafloors, where it can burrow and hide from predators. The umbrella octopus lives in perpetual darkness..

This octopus uses its webbed arms to trap small crustaceans and mollusks, which it consumes with its sharp beak. As with many cephalopods, reproduction is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Females lay their eggs in secure crevices or burrows and guard them devotedly until they hatch at which point the mother dies. One of its most intriguing traits is its single enlarged arm sucker, unique to males, believed to play a role in reproduction.
