Frogfish are masters of disguise in the marine world, blending seamlessly into their surroundings with remarkable camouflage. These quirky fish belong to the family Antennariidae in the order Lophiiformes, a group known for its anglerfish relatives. With over 50 species, frogfish are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, from coral reefs to seagrass beds. Their bodies are short, stocky, and covered in skin flaps, spines, or warts that mimic the textures of rocks, sponges, or algae. This camouflage not only hides them from predators but also helps them ambush prey. Frogfish are lie-and-wait predators, using a modified dorsal fin spine tipped with a fleshy lure, called an esca, to attract unsuspecting prey within striking range. With their enormous mouths and lightning-fast reflexes, they can engulf prey in as little as 6 milliseconds.
Frogfish are not strong swimmers, relying instead on their pectoral and pelvic fins to "walk" across the seafloor. This unique locomotion, combined with their ability to expand their bodies like balloons, makes them fascinating to watch.
